What Every First-Time Franchise Owner Wishes They'd Known Before Signing

Keith LiscioSeptember 4, 2026

Most professionals who think about buying a franchise never actually move on it.

They stall because they're waiting to feel certain first, and that certainty never shows up.

So the idea just sits there, revisited every few months, never acted on.

I hear a version of this on almost every discovery call:

"Keith, how do I know if this is the right time to buy a franchise?"

Here's my honest answer:

You probably won't ever feel like it's the right time… not with total certainty, anyway.

And after helping professionals move into franchise ownership successfully for years, I've stopped seeing that as a warning sign. It's just what standing at the edge of a big decision feels like.

There's a difference between needing more information and wanting a guarantee.

The first one, you can solve. The second one, you can't. No amount of research gives you that.

What you can do is close the gap on everything that's actually knowable:

→ Understand how the model works - what you'd be stepping into, day to day.

→ Run the real numbers - investment, financing options, what returns actually look like.

→ Get honest about fit - your schedule, your risk tolerance, what kind of owner you'd want to be.

→ Talk to people who've already done it and ask them what they wish they'd known on day one.

That's preparation. And it's exactly what my process is built to walk you through.

But at some point, you'll have all the information you're going to get, and your stomach might still flip a little when you think about actually doing it.

That's not a red flag.

That's just what growth feels like right before you take the leap.

The professionals I work with aren't the ones who eliminated every doubt before moving forward.

They're the ones who did the work to separate "I don't know enough yet" from "I'll never be 100% sure, and that's okay."

So if you've been sitting on the idea of franchise ownership, waiting to feel ready… you might be waiting for a feeling that isn't coming.

What you can do instead is get clear on what's actually true for your finances, your goals, and your life. Then decide from there.

That's a conversation I'm happy to have with you, no cost, no pressure, no obligation.
